The castle sleeps. As if someone had imposed an insidious curse on it. Only a few guards still resists and that is precisely, why I have to keep waiting. I dreamed many times about gold coins hidden in the castle and today I am closest to grabbing them. Finally. I believe, that today my pockets will be filled with glittering prizes, which I desire for so long.
And we will be the one, who under cover of sleep sneaks into the castle seeking treasure, all this in a small children’s game Burg Schlummerschatz (aka Sleepy Castle), created by Heinz Meister and illustrated by Gabriel Silveira. Game itself was published under flag of HABA in 2015 and is therefore still fresh news on the market.
This time, we are welcomed by a small yellow box (as expected) and we see sleeping guards at the door. And while head of one of the guards is filled with sweet dream about carrot, room behind him just witnesses robbery. And we also perform one, when we peek under the lid of the box and thus reveal a pile of cardboard pieces. With them, also wooden tokens lay on the bottom, which are in the same amount as number of tiles themselves – 24.
Two types of square tiles can be distinguished by their back side. Both sets, however, contain those same guards. But while on one set, their eyes are wide open, while others are asleep. Some of them are shuffled are create a hidden menu, while other twelve are placed into a ring. Among these pieces should be just enough space to squeeze one to three coins tokens there. Players try to divide them fairly, if possible, but still randomly.
Then, you can just start the game, because players themselves get nothing. They begin only with memory, which will be their most important companion on way to treasure. When participant comes to turn, he can reveal a total of two tiles. These two tiles conjure a spell. But its only powerful enough, if these two are standing next to each other and they fall asleep.
Each tile from the middle has its corresponding twin in that circle. Player’s aim is clear: to reveal two guards, who stand side by side. Only when both are asleep at the same time, player may immediately his reward – all the coins, that lies between them. Guarded room gets emptied and no further visitor can pickup any coins from there. So the game continues until such time, when there is nothing to steal anymore. With last coins picked up from the table, game ends and sum of collected tokens points to a winner – the one, who is the richest.
Burg Schlummerschatz is clearly a game of memory. But this time, you do not try to remember those pieces, that you should turn again. On the contrary, you should especially have overview of those, that were still not revealed. As coins are disappearing from the table, number of pairs, who already bear no profit, is rising.
Game is obviously aimed primarily at children. That is, why it is very simple and trains primarily memory. Twelve tiles maintain the difficulty of remembering really low, so you can play this news already with children of four years up. And it will certainly be appreciated by their parents, because the game is ultimately really fun and offers an interesting alternative to a similar memory games of hidden pairs.
Rules also contain a smart option for solitaire, that can surprisingly entertain very well. And also here, the main component of success is memory and player must even think tactically to succeed well.
Game is practically lightning fast and takes only ten minutes. This is another advantage for the children, because they will have no problem staying focused. They will certainly also appreciate playful illustrations, in which main actors are animals.
Burg Schlummerschatz does not disappoint even one preschooler, who can sit down. Game offers exactly, what kids at the table want and keep it at the correct dosage. Up to four opponents can participate in the game, and they will try their memory to the best. Burg Schlummerschatz will definitely not put you to sleep!
