Master is not at home, so cats can finally do, what they love the most. Meow and roll on the seat. Or are we all wrong with our assumptions? Look, door to the lab is open. And what’s going on inside? One experiment after another, and all directed by these lovely purring creatures. What the hell is happening?
Famous cat scientist were model for authors Heather Wilson, Heather O’Neill and Chris O’Neill, who designed and jointly published card game Schrödinger’s Cats. The game was additionally embellished by illustrations by James Stowe and game was published under the auspices of the 9th Level Games as a result of joint efforts of fans on Kickstarter. Thanks to its unique topic, it received support from nearly 2,000 fans there.
And result now lies in front of us in a small card box. On the cover, we see a lot of boxes, most of them opened, so the state of cats in it is no mystery. Yet. We must open that single box, that we have at hand, with a little anxienty. Are those cats alive or dead. Fortunately, our imagination is silenced by scoring game board and handbook with rules. Large format also has one page of stickers, that are here just for decoration as a bonus.
And then of course, there are main cards. There is a total 52 of them and ten other present cat scientists. The remaining set of cards already can be divided according to state of the concrete box. It may be entirely empty, but it also may contain cat dead or alive. And then there is Heisenberg uncertainty principle as the last possible state.
Game begins by each player getting as many cards as there is participants in this duel. In the middle of the table, players put together scoring board and also the one and only wooden cube. Players will also each get one scientist card, whose ability can be used once per game. This match can now be officially launched, because all the cats are hidden in boxes now!
Every player looks at his cards and does not show them to others. According to his set, each participant can make a bid specifying, how much cats are held by players around the table in one specific state. It only depends only on him, what box state he chooses. He may make a guess based on his hand and still may bluff. But every player always tries on the basis of his own cards guess contents of the hands of all participants. Mark the guess with cube on the common board, while on raising board are numbers listed by their value. Dead cat is more valuable, than living one, but all are clearly trumped by the empty box.
When a player raised his hypothesis, he could also play some cards from his hand on the table to support his claim. The next player in turn may decide to disapprove his bid. However playing cards brings with it another advantage – player can discard other cards from his hand and draw replacement from drawing deck instead.
Opponents play and raise the bid until the moment, when someone tries disprove hypothesis of previous player. This ends the round and game will eliminate player, who lost his battle – either by making untrue assumptions and was exposed or by being an unsuccessful challenger (the other player spoke truth). Game then continues to the next round until there is only one winner left in the match.
Schrödinger’s Cats is a bluffing game combined with an element of tempting luck. Players always know only part of the cards, that are in play and must risk sensibly. Gradually, their bets are raised and it’s all about the quantity in the end. Empty boxes can really mix things up, because they have a different value than everything else and having only half of them is enough to defeat cat dead or alive.
Game also allows some surprises by using special identity cards. Cats can become Mary Goeppertmeower or Sir Isaac Mewton. It can be seen, that authors do not lack a sense of humor and abilities allow to draw more cards or increase value of a specific cat state.
Player elimination is something, that probably many of you will not welcome with joy. Fortunately, the actual turns are very fast and thanks to this, game does not last long. Endless waiting will eventually not take place. The whole match with cats hidden in boxes eventually takes up reasonable twenty minutes (with four players), if you do not linger too much on deciding. Of course, the more players (up to six), the more rounds have to be played to eliminate them all. On the other hand, later rounds are faster, so it is not too bad. But it definitely has an impact on the experience – the more, the better.
The whole experience is definitely quite messy. And we are not only talking about the unexpected use of the character cards, but also about raising bids and hidden values. Although players can play their seasonal card as evidence, but many other trump cards remain in their hands until the end of the round. And not to mention Heisenberg cards, that act as wildcards and will take the form of whatever state is being played.
Although the actual linking with boxes and uncertain cat state is clever, gameplay resembles other games. Again, playing time comes to the rescue. Otherwise, however, the game does not offer anything (except the theme), what you would not find elsewhere, so it is up to personal preference, which game of taking chances will you choose and own.
This one has a really unique theme and luckily processing corresponds to that. Drawings are really good and assistant card helps players with orientation in different values. Without it, the game fun would be halved as you are quite bedazzled by raising bets (different values for each state). Stickers are a nice bonus, but best in the whole game is omnipresent humor.
Schrödinger’s Cats is a combination of cats and a very well-known scientific statement, which makes it a real candidate for purchase. At least for all cat lovers, who enjoy bluffing and chaotic quick games. You just have to reckon with player elimination and real unpredictability of the game. Schrödinger’s Cats is otherwise fine entertainment of card game genre, although not something extremely unique.
